1. “I want to tone.”
  2. “I need to gain weight, so I can turn fat into muscle.”
  3. “I’m bulking.”

These are things I often hear from a novice who’s just getting started on their health and fitness goals.

This blog will talk about “TONING.”

One of the number one things you’ll hear people say when first entering a gym or to their new personal trainer is that they want to tone. What they truly mean by this is that they want to be lean and have a visible level of muscularity or “muscle tone.” But when you explain to them that this will require them to build muscle, they usually panic. They envision a giant ultra lean bodybuilder and usually will follow the statement that was made to them by saying, “but I don’t want to get big.” This always makes me laugh a little; if it were only that easy. It’s only taken me 10-plus years of hard training and proper nutrition to get my physique. The moral of the story is we’re all “bodybuilding” in a sense. We’re just building a different body with different goals in mind. So to have muscle tone you will be required to have muscles to show along with a low enough body fat percentage to visibly see them.

Happy toning!
